UV index FAQ
What UV index is dangerous?
WHO scale: 0–2 low, 3–5 moderate, 6–7 high, 8–10 very high, 11+ extreme. From 3 up, protect yourself; from 8, skin can burn in just 15–20 minutes.
Do I need sunscreen on a cloudy day?
Yes. Thin or broken cloud blocks only a little UV and can even boost it by reflecting off cloud edges. Only very thick cloud cuts it much.
Why is UV higher in the tropics?
The sun is nearly overhead, so UV crosses less atmosphere. In the tropics, midday UV often exceeds 10 all year, especially in summer.
