Why are sunsets orange and red?

When the sun is low, its light crosses far more atmosphere than at noon. Blue light is scattered away (Rayleigh scattering), leaving the long wavelengths — yellow, orange, red — to reach our eyes. Dust, moisture and high clouds make the colours stronger.

Sunset time changes with season and latitude: later in summer, earlier in winter. Within one time zone, the further west, the later the sunset.

Tips for watching and photographing sunsets

  • Face westThe sun sets towards the southwest in winter and the northwest in summer — pick a spot with a clear view that way.
  • Arrive 30 minutes earlyGolden hour starts before sunset; the best colours often last 10–20 minutes after the sun is gone.
  • Thin clouds are bestMid and high clouds catch the orange light; a clear sky is plain and thick low cloud hides the sun.
  • Stay after sunsetThe blue hour after sunset suits city lights; once fully dark, look for stars and the Moon.

Sunset FAQ

What time is sunset today?

The “Today” card gives sunset for your place; the major cities table lists today's sunset in each city.

When should I go to watch the sunset?

Be there from the start of the evening golden hour — about 30–40 minutes before sunset — and stay 15–20 minutes after, as the sky often glows brightest just after the sun disappears. The sunset timeline gives these times for your place.

How long after sunset does it get dark?

It stays light until the end of civil dusk — when the sun is 6° below the horizon — usually 20–25 minutes after sunset in the tropics, longer at high latitudes. The “Full dark” column gives it for each place.

When is golden hour for photos?

Golden hour is when the sun is low, just after sunrise and just before sunset; the light is soft and warm. Blue hour is when the sun is just below the horizon and the sky deep blue — great for landscapes and cityscapes.

Why does day length change every day?

Because Earth's axis is tilted as it orbits the Sun. In the Northern Hemisphere the longest day is near the June solstice (around 21 June) and the shortest near the December solstice (around 21 December); the difference grows away from the equator.

How accurate are these sunset times?

Times come from NOAA's astronomical equations for each place's coordinates and time zone, within a minute. Terrain (mountains, tall buildings) can shift when you actually see the sun by a few minutes.
