How does sunrise time change?

Sunrise depends on the season, latitude and longitude. Summer days are longer, so the sun rises earlier and sets later; winter is the opposite. The further from the equator, the bigger the seasonal swing. Within one time zone, the further east, the earlier the sunrise.

Sunrise FAQ

What time is sunrise tomorrow?

Pick a place in the search box above; the “Tomorrow” card gives tomorrow's sunrise, first light and day length in local time.

How long before sunrise does it get light?

It gets light at civil dawn — when the sun is 6° below the horizon — usually 20–25 minutes before sunrise in the tropics, longer at high latitudes. The “First light” column gives it for each place.

When is golden hour for photos?

Golden hour is when the sun is low, just after sunrise and just before sunset; the light is soft and warm. Blue hour is when the sun is just below the horizon and the sky deep blue — great for landscapes and cityscapes.

Why does day length change every day?

Because Earth's axis is tilted as it orbits the Sun. In the Northern Hemisphere the longest day is near the June solstice (around 21 June) and the shortest near the December solstice (around 21 December); the difference grows away from the equator.

How accurate are these sunrise times?

Times come from NOAA's astronomical equations for each place's coordinates and time zone, within a minute. Terrain (mountains, tall buildings) can shift when you actually see the sun by a few minutes.
