Stargazing tips
To see more stars
- Get away from lightsHead to the countryside, mountains or the coast; city light hides most faint stars.
- Let your eyes adaptEyes need 20โ30 minutes to adapt; use a red light instead of a bright phone screen.
- Pick a moonless nightNear new moon or after moonset the Milky Way is clearest.
- Dress warmlyNights at altitude cool fast; bring a jacket, a folding chair and insect repellent.
Night sky FAQ
Can I see stars tonight?
See the โStargazing tonightโ card: under 25% mean cloud is good, 25โ60% fair, over 60% poor. The brighter the Moon, the fewer stars; best with clear skies after moonset or near new moon.
When is the full moon?
Full moons come about every 29.5 days, usually on the 14thโ16th of the lunar month. The 7-day Moon table shows each day's phase and illumination.
Why does moonrise change every day?
The Moon orbits in the same direction the Earth spins, so it rises about 50 minutes later each day on average. Some days it does not rise or set at all.
Is the moon phase the same everywhere?
Yes โ phase and illumination are the same worldwide at a given moment. Moonrise and moonset differ by place, and in the Southern Hemisphere the Moon appears flipped left to right.
