Cloud-hunting spots

Sorted by their best sunrise score

What makes a sea of clouds?

  • High humidityNear-saturated air (over ~90%) so moisture condenses into thick low cloud and fog.
  • Low cloud presentThe sea of clouds is the low cloud or fog below you — without it the score is capped.
  • Clear sky aboveThe less mid and high cloud, the clearer the sunrise and the brighter the sea of clouds.
  • Light windStrong wind tears the layer apart; calm air keeps it flat and lasting.
  • No rainRain makes roads slippery, the air murky and the layer less distinct.

Cloud-hunting tips

  • Reach the top before sunriseIt is best from about 2 hours before to 1 hour after sunrise; go early to get a spot.
  • Bring warm clothesSummits at dawn are often much colder and damper than the valley.
  • Shoot the first lightCatch the sun just clearing the cloud edge — golden pink light washes the layer.
  • Recheck the night beforeForecasts improve closer to the day; check the score again the evening before.

Cloud hunting FAQ

How is the score calculated?

A 0–100 score from five factors over the window from 2 hours before to 1 hour after sunrise: humidity (25), low cloud (25), mid and high cloud (20), wind (15), rain (15). With almost no low cloud or fog forecast, the score is capped at 40.

Does a high score guarantee a sea of clouds?

No. The forecast is for the nearest town, not the summit, and a sea of clouds depends on local terrain. The score helps pick a day; it is not a guarantee.

What season is best?

Usually the cool season and the transitions, when cold, humid, calm nights pool low cloud in valleys. A clear, humid morning after rain often brings one too.

What score should I look for?

75 and above is a high chance, 50–74 medium. Pick a high-scoring day if you can and check again the evening before you set off.
